Hello 👋

For the past year, you've been receiving our perspectives on Responsible AI - analyses that have helped shape decisions in boardrooms, tech companies, and investment committees. This means that this is the one year anniversary of this newsletter. 🎂

Thank you for being here. Today, we'd like to properly introduce ourselves.

In this week's newsletter

What we’re talking about: The story and people behind your weekly AI insights.

How it’s relevant: In an era where AI capabilities are expanding rapidly, understanding who guides your AI strategy matters. Lumiera's approach combines technical expertise with human wisdom to help organizations navigate responsible AI implementation.

Why it matters: As AI becomes increasingly central to businesses and other organisations, having trusted advisors who understand both the technical and human dimensions of AI implementation is crucial for making responsible decisions that create lasting value.

Big tech news of the week…

🖥️ Meta’s new content moderation methods: Major changes have been made to Meta’s content policy with a far-reaching impact on content governance. Acknowledging the errors in its complex systems, the aim is to reduce over-enforcement and unnecessary censorship. Nobel-prize-winning journalist Maria Ressa said that this change in policy would “lead to a world without facts”. If you want the insider perspective - read this thread.

🌍 Apple’s news alert failure: Apple Intelligence, an AI function made to summarise and group together news notifications, has invented entirely false claims. The company behind iPhone has now been urged to drop the feature.

⚖️ Big fines for OpenAI due to GDPR breach: Italy's data protection authority has fined ChatGPT maker OpenAI a fine of €15 million ($15.66 million), as the company has failed to identify a valid legal basis for processing user personal information.

The Founders of Lumiera: Who are we?

Let’s start with the basics. Lumiera was founded by two individuals driven by perpetual curiosity: Emma and Allegra. As co-founders, our complementary perspectives shape every solution we create together. Our story began in the beautiful city of Lisbon, Portugal, years ago. While we immediately recognized the potential for collaboration, life first took us to different sides of the Atlantic. Allegra was working with Chime in California's innovation hub, while Emma guided tech companies across Europe, from the snow-capped mountains of Scandinavia to bustling tech hubs in countries like the UK, France, and Germany.

The name Lumiera [ˈlumiˈɪərə] combines two powerful concepts:
Lumi (light/bright) and Era (future), reflecting our commitment to build solutions for a bright future.

The sudden, explosive emergence of generative AI (GenAI) on the tech scene led to unprecedented rapid adoption and far-reaching impact. However, this revolution was shadowed by a blatant gap in strategic readiness across industries, highlighting the need for informed decision-making and responsible innovation. Our paths converged through Lumiera.

About Emma, our CEO

Coming from the mountains of northern Sweden, she brings both her love for downhill skiing and appreciation for nature to her leadership approach. With an international background in law and diplomacy, Emma leads our vision of transforming responsible AI from abstract principles into practical, customized implementation strategies. Her experience includes leading technological transformation and natural language processing projects at companies like Google and Klarna. She's a certified AI for Business advisor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

About Allegra, our CTO

Growing up just outside Washington, D.C., and spending much of her life visiting family in Lisbon, Allegra now calls Portugal home. In addition to being a certified AI for business advisor, she is also a passionate runner, swimmer, and photographer. Creativity and focus are core traits that guide her as a technical leader. Allegra built her career in the U.S. tech scene, driving innovation through data enablement and AI at leading companies including Chime and Cloudflare. At Lumiera, she combines strategic vision with technical expertise to drive responsible, forward-looking solutions.
